Dans un lointain futur où la Terre est restée le centre de l’univers humain, et où les humains n’ont rencontré qu’une seule espèce pensante extra-terrestre, les Ashiyyuréens, ou Muets parce qu’ils communiquent entre eux par télépathie, l’archéologie et le commerce d’antiquités sont restées ce qu’elles sont chez nous. L’antiquaire Axel Benedict et son associée Chase Kolpath reçoivent un jour une coupe vieille de neuf mille ans, qui proviendrait d’un vaisseau spatial, le Seeker, qui a appartenu aux Margoliens, des humains qui avaient émigré vers une planète qu’on n’a jamais retrouvée.
