Ce roman sur la surpopulation envisagée pour la fin du siècle dernier a sans doute un peu perdu de son pouvoir prophétique, tellement les craintes actuelles (réchauffement climatique, d'ailleurs évoqué dans le roman, terrorisme, maladies nouvelles …) surpassent de loin celle de la surpopulation. Pourtant le portrait du New York de 1999 évoqué dans ce roman est une simple caricature de la situation de certaines villes du « tiers-monde », la pénurie alimentaire en plus.
