Ce roman nous présente un autre monde, dont nous découvrons l'histoire au fur et à mesure des pérégrinations du narrateur Liesse et de celles, qu'il nous rapporte, de l'héroïne. Né dans l'Archipel, duquel il a été banni quand sa mère l'a vendu à des représentants de l'Empire, il va devenir l'apprenti de ces représentants, puis le secrétaire de la gouverneure Malvine Zelina de Félarasie, Ambassadrice Impériale dans l'Archipel, qu'il va ensuite suivre à son poste suivant à Solmeri.
