Etats-Unis, Nouvelle Angleterre, 2000. Un jeune journaliste dans une feuille de chou locale, Paul Tomm, est chargé de faire quelques lignes sur la mort d’un professeur de l’université qu’il a fréquentée. Petit à petit, le mystère s’épaissit : à la place d’un vieil Estonien simple se profile un homme insaisissable et particulièrement dangereux, même mort.

Tout perdre et tout gagner...

1154, pourtour méditerranéen. Un voleur s’introduit dans une superbe demeure qui semble vide. Il y vole 15 objets de valeur variée. Il vient de cambrioler la maison de Al-Idrisi, géographe officiel du Roi Roger II.

Siècle après siècle, un amateur tente en secret de rassembler les 15 objets et n’hésite pas à traverser les continents, à tuer des innocents et à affronter des systèmes cruels.

Un savant jeu entre les chapitres mêle l’histoire du vol, la vie de ce journaliste qui cherche sa voie et celles d’hommes qui restent souvent une énigme pour le lecteur (mais la solution est bien là !).

Il faut patienter 80 % du livre pour trouver des pistes, glissantes...

Il faut avoir la foi même si on découvre cette phrase au détour d’un dialogue “L’adversité soutenait notre foi, la prospérité l’a anéantie”.

Fort proche de l’esprit du “Nom de la Rose” de l’Italien Umberto Eco, une touche d’humour saupoudre le récit, notamment du à l’irrésistible maladresse de Paul Tomm. Ajoutez pour une recette réussie un peu d’érudition et vous obtenez ce premier roman qui fut et est (en poche maintenant) une très belle première oeuvre...
