Santal est la planète des vents. Régulièrement, un cratère ouvert sur le centre de la planète aspire l’air de l’atmosphère, créant des tempêtes tourbillonnantes emportant tout sur leur passage, et contre lesquelles les santalites s’organisent comme ils peuvent. Ils prennent du poids, s’ancrent dans le sol, se déplacent dans des animaux très lourds, vivent sous terre, ...

David arrive sur Santal afin de vérifier s’il est possible d’y installer une colonie de vacances centrée sur les loisirs utilisant le vent (vol à voile, ...). Saba, une jeune fille cynthonienne, vient s’exposer au soleil de Santal afin de révéler des tatouages lui prédisant son avenir. Judith est représentante en produits permettant de prendre du poids rapidement.
Le trio se met en route vers le cratère, chacun avec ses objectifs.

"Rempart des naufrageurs" est le second volume du cycle de la planète des ouragans, le premier était "La petite fille et le doberman". On retrouve d’ailleurs à un moment du récit Nathalie et le chien Cédric comme personnages secondaires dans le périple des protagonistes.
Comme d’habitude chez Brussolo, l’histoire n’est qu’un prétexte pour lui permettre de placer les images délirantes nées de son imagination décidément sans limite. À ce point, les amateurs seront une fois de plus comblés. La trame linéaire (le voyage du trio) permet au lecteur de passer d’une contrée à l’autre, d’une culture à l’autre, dans un univers sans cesse plus délirant et toujours très sombre.

La fin relativement ouverte laisse croire que le périple se poursuivra dans le troisième volume du cycle "Naufrage sur une chaise électrique".

Quoi qu’il en soit, les amateurs de Brussolo ne seront pas déçus. L’ont-ils jamais été ?
