Relire Walter Benjamin

On connaît surtout Walter Benjamin (1892-1940), philosophe et critique littéraire juif allemand (on lui doit une superbe étude sur Baudelaire) pour son œuvre littéraire et sa fin tragique. Le pari de cet ouvrage d’Agnès Sinaï est de faire de cet homme, en réévaluant son œuvre, un précurseur de la décroissance. Pari osé, diront certains.

 

Un critique du progrès

De fait, Benjamin s’est fait dans son œuvre un critique du progrès et du productivisme industriel. Sa fréquentation de Baudelaire et de la littérature française du XIXe siècle l’amène à critiquer la transformation du paysage urbain, ainsi que le culte des marchandises. Benjamin, lecteur de Marx, ne voit pas cela comme un progrès mais comme une aliénation. À cela il oppose la flânerie, la collection : collectionner, n’est-ce pas nier la marchandisation et surtout la consommation de masse qui s’annonce ? Il critique aussi l’idée de progrès historique basé sur l’amélioration technique. Benjamin, si on suit Agnès Sinaï, est donc bien un précurseur de l’idée de décroissance et surtout un penseur toujours actuel : fascinant.
